The Ghana Education Service (GES) has issued a strong directive to all heads of Senior High Schools (SHSs) to immediately refund any fees collected from students or their parents for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) practicals.
The order follows a government decision to fully absorb the cost of this year’s WASSCE practical examinations—including the provision of all necessary materials and logistics—effectively eliminating the need for any separate financial contributions from candidates.
In a statement signed by the Acting Deputy Director-General of GES, Professor Smile Dzisi, the Service emphasised that “school heads are to notify their respective Regional Directors once refunds have been completed.”

GES also directed that all reimbursements must be properly documented, with official receipts issued to confirm the repayment.
The move is aimed at relieving financial pressure on students and their families, especially those who might otherwise struggle to afford such fees.
“This measure ensures that no student is left behind or barred from writing the practical exams due to an inability to pay,” the statement said.
The GES further warned that any failure to comply with the directive “will be considered a serious breach of official instructions and may attract administrative sanctions.”
The Service is urging parents and guardians to report non-compliance to the appropriate regional or district education offices.
