GES Maintains SHS Reopening Date Despite CHASS Request

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed that the reopening date for senior high schools remains unchanged, despite a request from the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) for a postponement.

In a statement issued on Thursday, January 2, 2025, a day before the scheduled reopening, the GES reiterated that the 2024/25 academic calendar will proceed as announced.

Senior High School (SHS) students are expected to return to school on January 3, 2025, while primary and Junior High School (JHS) students will resume classes on January 8, 2025.

CHASS had earlier addressed the Ministry of Education, warning that unresolved financial constraints in second-cycle schools could disrupt the reopening process. In a strongly worded statement issued a few days ago, the leadership of CHASS advised against reopening schools without resolving these issues.

Despite these concerns, the GES assured the public that it is actively working with the Ministry of Education to address the issues raised by CHASS.

“We are committed to resolving these challenges swiftly to ensure a smooth start to the academic year,” the statement noted.

The GES also reminded students, staff, parents, and the general public to adhere to the announced dates and make the necessary preparations for the reopening of schools.

Acknowledging the importance of the academic schedule, the GES emphasised the need for cooperation among all stakeholders to ensure the successful reopening of schools across the country.

“We urge all stakeholders to take note of these important dates and make the necessary arrangements for the start of the new academic year,” the statement concluded.

As the academic year approaches, GES’ assurance aims to provide clarity and maintain stability in the education sector, even as discussions continue to address the financial concerns raised by CHASS.
