Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed that the number of Ghanaians displaced by the Gbinyiri conflict in Côte d’Ivoire has dropped significantly from 13,253 to 5,309, following the safe return of about 8,000 citizens.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, September 15, 2025, the minister explained that the new figures were confirmed after a recent census conducted during his official visit to affected communities in northern Côte d’Ivoire.
“During my visit, I discovered that about 8,000 Ghanaians have safely returned home. The latest census conducted reveals that the remaining number of Ghanaians in Côte d’Ivoire is 5,309. No more 13,253,” he said.

The Gbinyiri conflict, which stemmed from a land dispute, forced thousands of people—mostly women and children—to flee across the border into makeshift settlements.
During his visit, Mr Ablakwa carried a message from President John Dramani Mahama, encouraging displaced Ghanaians to return home under improved security conditions.
“I delivered a special message from President Mahama—a message of peace and forgiveness, and a message appealing to all our compatriots to return home since the government has beefed up security and ensured that normalcy is restored,” he noted.
To meet urgent needs and facilitate voluntary return, the minister announced a donation of CFA 6 million on behalf of the president.
“On behalf of President Mahama, I donated CFA 6 million to cover urgent humanitarian needs and to facilitate logistical requirements for their safe return home. This donation is distinct from other relief items, including food, water, blankets and medicines already provided through NADMO,” Mr Ablakwa clarified.
The conflict has claimed lives and displaced thousands, with government interventions focused on peacebuilding, mediation, and security reinforcement in affected areas. Officials say the priority now is to encourage remaining citizens in Côte d’Ivoire to return safely and reintegrate into their communities.
