The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has issued a strong warning to the public about fraudulent social media posts falsely claiming to offer lost or forgotten baggage for sale at Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
In a statement released on January 16, 2025, GACL clarified that these social media posts are false and part of a scheme aimed at deceiving the public for financial gain. The posts, which first emerged in October 2024, have resurfaced with new tactics to mislead people into believing that they can purchase items from unclaimed baggage at KIA.
GACL emphasised that the posts have no basis in reality and urged the public to disregard them immediately. The company explained that they had issued a previous disclaimer when the fraudulent activity was first noticed, but the perpetrators have returned with similar deceptive tactics.
“These individuals are using Facebook to mislead unsuspecting members of the public into paying a specific amount of money,” the statement read. “GACL wants to make it clear that these posts are completely false, and they should not be entertained.”
The Ghana Airports Company reassured the public that lost or forgotten baggage at KIA is handled through official procedures, and there is no legitimate sale of such items. GACL has also warned that the fraudsters are exploiting the growing use of social media platforms to trick people into making payments under false pretences.
As a precaution, GACL encouraged the public to rely only on official channels and verified sources for any information related to lost or found property at the airport. The company is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all passengers and will continue to monitor and respond to fraudulent activities aimed at misleading the public.
For anyone who encounters suspicious activities or posts related to the sale of lost baggage, GACL urges them to report the matter to the authorities immediately.
