Kumasi’s Central Business District (CBD) is witnessing a surge in the use of power generators as persistent intermittent power outages continue to disrupt daily life in the Ashanti Region.
For weeks, businesses and residents have struggled to cope with unreliable electricity, forcing many establishments—including banks, restaurants, and retail shops—to depend on generators to stay operational.
The once vibrant streets of Kumasi are now filled with the constant hum of generators, a stark reminder of the deepening power crisis. The power cuts have slowed production, disrupted businesses, and affected thousands of livelihoods.

Many traders and small business owners have been left with no choice but to invest in generators despite the high cost of fuel.
“I’ve bought one generator, and now I need another for my workplace. Times are hard,” lamented a frustrated trader.
Others fear the situation is signalling the return of dumsor, the prolonged power crisis that plagued Ghana in the past.
“They should provide us with a timetable; that would be better,” another business owner suggested, referring to scheduled power outages to help businesses plan ahead.
Benjamin Antwi, Public Relations Officer for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) – Ashanti West, acknowledged the challenges and assured residents that steps are being taken to stabilise the situation.
“We apologise to all our clients for the inconvenience caused. We want to assure them that measures are in place to address the situation,” he said.
He also pointed to a troubling issue—the consistent theft of electrical installations, which he said is exacerbating the crisis.
While other parts of the country have also been affected by power cuts, Kumasi’s situation is particularly severe due to its high energy demand.
As businesses continue to struggle and fuel costs rise, residents are calling on authorities to urgently address the power situation before the crisis deepens.
