Four Independent MPs to Join NDC Majority Caucus in Parliament

In a significant political development, four independent Members of Parliament (MPs) have announced their intention to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC), bolstering the party’s majority in the 8th Parliament of Ghana.

The MPs—Worlase Kpeli (Afram Plains North), Stanley Yaw Nandaya (Wulensi), Kwame Asare Obeng (popularly known as A Plus, Gomoa Central), and Kwame Ohene Frimpong (Asante Akyem North)—confirmed their decision during the first sitting of Parliament for the year, held on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.

The announcement was made by the Majority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who represents Ajumako Enyan Essiam. He welcomed the four MPs to the NDC caucus, stating that their move further solidifies the party’s position as the majority in Parliament.

“We are pleased to confirm that these four distinguished MPs have decided to join the NDC Majority Caucus. Their decision will undoubtedly strengthen our position as we work to deliver on the promises made to the Ghanaian people,” Dr. Forson remarked.

Despite the public announcement, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has requested that the four MPs submit formal letters of notification regarding their decision to join the NDC.

This request comes as Parliament prepares to form various committees, and the Speaker emphasised that the official notification was necessary for the proper documentation of the MPs’ new affiliation.

The move is seen as crucial in terms of parliamentary procedures, as the change in caucus membership may affect the allocation of committee positions and the overall balance of power in Parliament.
