Forestry Commission Probes Extortion Claims at Sokoban Wood Village

The Forestry Commission has initiated an investigation into allegations of extortion and harassment made by wood traders at the Sokoban Wood Village in the Ashanti Region.

This follows a protest staged by aggrieved traders on Tuesday, who accused Commission officials of demanding extra payments during the transportation of wood products—despite already paying GH¢4,000 in export fees and obtaining official receipts.

In a statement issued by the Commission, the leadership said it takes the allegations seriously and is committed to addressing the concerns through dialogue and proper stakeholder engagement.

“The Forestry Commission is investigating the issues raised and has invited members of the Sokoban Wood Village, the executives of the Domestic Lumber Traders Association (DOLTA), and the Domestic Lumber Millers Association of Ghana (DOLMAG), among others,” the statement said.

A key stakeholder meeting has been scheduled for Friday, July 25, 2025, at the Commission’s headquarters to discuss the matter.

The Commission also disclosed that a prior meeting with the wood traders was held on May 12, 2025, where several grievances were discussed and resolved to the satisfaction of all parties. A committee was subsequently established to monitor the implementation of the agreed resolutions.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and collaboration, the Forestry Commission assured stakeholders of its readiness to resolve all concerns through respectful and constructive engagement.
