Foreign Affairs Ministry Spends $15m Annually on Rent Abroad – Ablakwa

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that the ministry spends an estimated $15 million annually on rent for foreign service officers posted overseas — a figure he says places a significant strain on the ministry’s budget.

To address the situation, the minister announced a new policy to gradually reduce rent expenses by purchasing at least two properties each year. The plan aims to invest in long-term infrastructure to support officers and improve cost efficiency across Ghana’s diplomatic missions.

Mr Ablakwa, however, expressed concern over the poor maintenance culture at some embassies and high commissions. He cited deteriorating government-owned properties in various countries and stressed the need for immediate attention to ensure safety and preserve the country’s assets abroad.

He also announced that officers stationed in hardship or high-risk areas would now be reposted every two years to promote staff welfare and avoid prolonged exposure to difficult conditions.

The minister made these remarks during a visit to the Ghana High Commission in Abuja, Nigeria, as part of a working tour of Benin, Nigeria, and Togo. The trip is focused on strengthening ties with Ghana’s missions and listening to concerns from staff and members of the Ghanaian diaspora.

According to Mr Ablakwa, the tour is part of a hands-on strategy to reform the ministry and implement practical solutions to long-standing challenges in the Foreign Service.
