Five Dead in Nsawam Sand Winning Clash, Police Launch Probe

The Eastern South Regional Police Command has begun a full-scale investigation into a fatal shooting incident that left five men dead at Asiyaw, a community near Akwane-Dobro in the Nsawam area, on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

In a statement released by the police, a crime scene team dispatched to the area discovered the lifeless bodies of five adult males, all with gunshot wounds, sparking fears of rising violence linked to illegal sand winning operations in the area.

  • One Toyota Tundra vehicle
  • One pump-action gun with 17 live cartridges
  • Four empty cartridges
  • Three 7.62/39mm empty shells
  • One 9mm empty shell
  • Five heavy-duty motorbikes

Investigators say early evidence suggests a violent confrontation between two rival groups engaged in illegal sand mining. The clash is believed to have stemmed from a dispute over territorial control and access to sand deposits in the enclave.

The bodies of the deceased have since been conveyed to the Police Hospital mortuary in Accra for preservation, identification, and autopsy, as police intensify their efforts to track down and arrest the perpetrators.

Authorities are urging residents in the area to remain calm but vigilant while also appealing for any information that could assist in identifying those responsible.

The deadly confrontation highlights the growing tension and lawlessness surrounding unregulated natural resource exploitation, particularly in semi-rural areas with minimal law enforcement presence.
