Firefighter Injured In Accra Central Fire — GNFS
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed that one firefighter was injured while battling the devastating fire outbreak that occurred near the Accra Central Police Station on Wednesday, June 4.
The Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Alex King Nartey, disclosed that the injured officer remains the only casualty recorded in the incident, which destroyed a building and its contents due to the intensity of the blaze.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, June 5, Mr Nartey explained that the firefighter sustained serious injuries after the metallic end of a fire hose detached from the pump during operations and struck him in the chest.
”But as we speak, he is responding to treatment at the police hospital."
Despite the destruction caused by the fire, Mr Nartey said firefighters were successful in preventing the blaze from spreading to neighbouring structures. He noted that although the building where the fire originated was completely destroyed, adjoining buildings were salvaged.
”The challenge was accessibility because you realise that, in that area, working through it on a regular day is not even easy. How much more is a fire tender with this big tank? So we had challenges getting to the scene. Again, interference from people proved to be a very big challenge because people were not giving us the room to operate,” he stated
