A devastating fire has gutted several shops at the Suame industrial enclave in Kumasi, destroying properties worth millions of cedis.
The blaze, which erupted late Friday night, January 31, tore through shops in an area known as “Garage,” ravaging vehicles, spare parts, and auto-mechanic equipment.
The fire reportedly started in one of the shops and quickly spread, consuming nearby establishments. Five fire tenders were dispatched to the scene in a bid to control the inferno, while residents in the vicinity sought refuge as the flames raged through the industrial zone.
Although the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, eyewitnesses have suggested that an electrical fault may have ignited nearby gas cylinders, triggering a larger fire that spread to surrounding shops.
Firefighters worked relentlessly to bring the situation under control, managing to fully extinguish the blaze after hours of effort. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported, though the property damage is extensive, leaving many local business owners counting their losses.
This fire follows a similar incident just four days earlier, on January 27, when a blaze destroyed around ten cars and ten shops in the same Suame industrial enclave. The recurring fires have raised concerns about safety and fire prevention measures in the area, which remains the largest auto-mechanic and trading centre in the Ashanti Region.
Authorities are urging residents and business owners in the enclave to exercise caution, and investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing. Local officials have also promised to review safety protocols to prevent further incidents in the area.
