A devastating fire has reduced a dormitory block at Sakafia Islamic Basic School in Sawaba, Asokore Mampong Municipality, Ashanti Region, to ashes, leaving students in fear and distress.
The blaze broke out around 2 a.m. on Friday, February 28, 2025, spreading quickly through the dormitory while students were asleep. Fortunately, swift action by school authorities ensured that all students were safely evacuated, preventing any injuries or fatalities.

Speaking to Citi News, Senior Housemaster Umar Ibrahim recounted the harrowing experience.
“The fire started around 2 a.m. when we were all asleep. I sleep in a separate room, while the students stay in a six-room dormitory. The children woke me up, and by then, most of them were still asleep. The senior housemistress and I had to quickly wake them up and help them escape the fire.”
Firefighters arrived at the scene late but managed to contain the fire before it spread to other school buildings. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities have launched an investigation.
The incident has left students and parents in distress, raising concerns about fire safety in schools. Meanwhile, school authorities are working on temporary accommodation arrangements for the displaced students.
