Finance Minister Pledges Fiscal Discipline, Announces Cost-Cutting Measures

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline, assuring investors and development partners of a strong and sustainable financial path.

Speaking after a high-level meeting with World Bank Division Director Robert Taliercio O’Brien and his team, Dr Forson welcomed the World Bank’s continued support for Ghana’s education reforms and additional funding to drive progress in the sector.

He acknowledged the economic hurdles of the past year, during which Ghana struggled to achieve even a 0.5% primary surplus. However, he emphasised that the government remains firmly committed to maintaining fiscal discipline, particularly under its IMF-supported programme.

To achieve this, the minister announced decisive cost-cutting measures across government institutions. Among these, he declared an end to free, non-essential conference travel, noting that delegation sizes would be significantly reduced. Moving forward, three officials will be expected to deliver the work of ten, ensuring efficiency without compromising productivity.

Further, he revealed substantial budget reductions, including within the Office of the President, as part of efforts to channel resources into key projects that drive economic growth and improve the lives of Ghanaians.

“These measures reflect our commitment to prudent resource management and ensure that every cedi is spent where it matters most,” Dr Forson stated.

With these reforms, the government is signalling a new era of financial responsibility, reinforcing confidence in Ghana’s economic recovery and long-term stability.
