FDA Warns Food Vendors of Fraudulent Calls Posing as Investigations

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has raised the alarm about a new scam targeting food service establishments, including restaurants, eateries, and other food vendors.

Scammers are impersonating FDA officers and claiming to be investigating food poisoning incidents.

The fraudsters’ modus operandi involves making phone calls to food vendors and demanding access to their WhatsApp accounts. Once granted access, the scammers can exploit confidential information such as client databases or even hack into the businesses’ systems. In some instances, they may use these tactics to extort money from their targets.

The FDA has made it clear that it does not conduct investigations or enforcement activities through telephone calls. Instead, all official inspections and enquiries are performed through onsite visits by verified FDA officers.

To avoid falling victim to these scams, the FDA advises food vendors to:

• Refuse any requests for access to personal or business communication platforms.
• Verify the identity of individuals claiming to represent the FDA.
• Report suspicious calls immediately to the FDA or local authorities.
