The Tarkwa Circuit Court has sentenced Kofi Essien, a 24-year-old ex-convict and illegal miner known as “Buffon,” to eight years of imprisonment with hard labour.
Essien was convicted for threatening to harm his mother, Madam Agnes Boadi, and causing unlawful damage to her property in Wassa Essikuma, Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality.
Chief Superintendent Alex Odonkor, prosecuting, narrated that Essien, who had previously served a prison sentence, returned home two years ago to discover his mother in a relationship. Unhappy with the situation, he warned her to end the relationship.
When Madam Boadi, a 47-year-old farmer, refused to comply, Essien began issuing threats to kill her. His attacks escalated two weeks ago, forcing the complainant to leave their shared residence and seek refuge with her boyfriend, who lived in the same town.
The following day, Essien followed his mother to her boyfriend’s house and demanded she return home. When she refused, he returned to their home, picked a cutlass, and damaged the key to her door. Unsatisfied, he retrieved a pickaxe and created holes in the walls of the building, causing damages estimated at GH¢2,570.
Madam Boadi reported the incident to the Wassa Aboso police, leading to Essien’s arrest. He was charged with causing unlawful damage and threatening harm. In court, Essien pleaded guilty with an explanation but was convicted based on the evidence presented.
Presided over by Mrs. Hathia Ama Manu, the Tarkwa Circuit Court sentenced Essien to eight years of imprisonment with hard labour, ensuring justice for the complainant and reaffirming the seriousness of his offences.
