Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has attributed Ghana’s prolonged inability to win major football tournaments to the actions of unnamed “evil” individuals.
In a candid Instagram Live session that has since gone viral, Gyan’s reflections on his time with the national team dominated the discussion.
“There are evil people in this country; that’s why we can’t win anything because of these people. They have tarnished Ghana’s reputation with dirt,” Gyan remarked during the emotionally charged session.
Ghana’s last African Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory was 43 years ago, a frustrating drought for a nation with a rich footballing history. The Black Stars will also miss out on the next AFCON tournament in Morocco this year, further deepening the nation’s despair.
While Gyan refrained from naming specific individuals in his accusations, his comments provided hints about some of the entities he blames. “They used my popularity as a political tactic to get my fans to vote for them,” Gyan stated, referencing his involvement with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the campaign team of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Gyan had been appointed chairman of the youth and sports subcommittee for the NPP’s manifesto committee, a role he held for six months before stepping down.
The former captain’s decision to leave politics coincided with his announcement of a renewed focus on youth development. Through the Asamoah Gyan Foundation, he plans to provide Ghanaian youth with opportunities via sports academies, training centres, and mentorship programs.
