Eric Opoku Pledges Reforms to Revive Ghana’s Poultry Sector

Eric Opoku, the Minister-Designate for Food and Agriculture, has identified Ghana’s poultry industry as being in a state of crisis, emphasising the urgent need for reforms to secure food supply and stimulate economic growth.

During his vetting on Monday, January 20, Opoku pointed out the sector’s struggle to meet the growing demand for poultry products, citing significant gaps between supply and consumer needs.

Opoku outlined a detailed strategy to revitalise the poultry industry, with a flagship initiative dubbed the “Poultry Farm to the Table Programme.”. This program aims to support poultry farmers in expanding their operations and boosting production levels.

“To revamp the poultry sector, we have outlined a program in our manifesto called the ‘Poultry Farm to the Table Programme,’” Opoku said. “Under this initiative, we aim to collaborate with poultry farmers’ associations, providing them with the necessary financial resources to expand their businesses and increase production.”

A key obstacle in the sector, according to Opoku, is the high cost of poultry feed, which significantly impacts profitability and growth. To address this, he pledged to prioritise the local production of affordable poultry feed.

“We will focus on ensuring that poultry farmers have access to affordable feed, which is critical to reducing their costs and helping them scale their businesses,” Opoku explained.

The minister-designate stressed that the overarching goal of the program is to reduce the supply-demand gap, ensuring that poultry products are accessible and affordable for Ghanaian consumers.

“By increasing production and addressing critical challenges, we aim to meet the growing demand for poultry products and secure food security in the country,” he stated.
