Electrical Fault Sparks Fire at Oyoko Methodist SHS- GFS

A swift response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) averted a major disaster at the Oyoko Methodist Senior High School in Koforidua after an electrical fault triggered a fire in the school’s boys’ dormitory block on Monday evening.

The blaze, which broke out around 6:24 p.m., was traced to the two-bedroom self-contained apartment of the housemaster located on the first floor of a one-story building. Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire started from an electrical fault in the ceiling of the apartment before spreading rapidly.

The incident destroyed the roof, ceiling, furniture, home appliances, and other personal belongings in the housemaster’s residence. However, the adjoining boys’ dormitory was spared extensive damage due to the quick and coordinated efforts of firefighters.

GNFS officials from both the New Juaben North and South Municipal Fire Commands, supported by the Eastern Regional Fire Command, rushed to the scene with two fire engines. The first engine, led by ADO I Asare, arrived at 6:34 p.m., bringing the fire under control by 7:24 p.m. and fully extinguishing it by 8:29 p.m.

“Fortunately, no casualties were recorded. Our team acted promptly to contain the fire and protect the students’ dormitory,” the GNFS stated.

The service has urged educational institutions to conduct regular electrical maintenance checks to prevent similar incidents in the future. Investigations are ongoing to confirm the precise cause of the fire.
