President John Dramani Mahama has called on the people of Bawku in the Upper East Region to embrace peace during the holy month of Ramadan.
Speaking at the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations organised by the National Chief Imam at Accra’s Black Star Square on Monday, March 31, 2025, the president emphasised that Ramadan is a time for unity, reflection, and reconciliation.
Addressing the gathering of Muslims from across the country, President Mahama urged factions involved in the protracted Bawku conflict to set aside their differences and work towards lasting peace. He stressed that persistent conflict only hinders development and disrupts livelihoods, making it imperative for all parties to pursue peace.

“Finally, as we celebrate this Ramadan, I want to urge my brothers and sisters in Bawku to give peace a chance. Ramadan is a period for togetherness,” he stated, highlighting the significance of the holy month as a time for forgiveness and compassion.
President Mahama also called on religious and traditional leaders in Bawku to intensify their efforts in mediating and fostering dialogue among the various factions. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring lasting peace and development in the conflict-prone area.
“Let us use this sacred occasion to reflect on the values of love, forgiveness, and harmony. Together, we can build a stronger and more united community,” President Mahama said.
The Bawku conflict, which has persisted for decades, continues to pose a threat to peace and stability in the region. President Mahama’s appeal comes at a crucial time, with many hoping the spirit of Ramadan will inspire reconciliation and a renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence.
