Effutu Municipal Assembly Condemns Sofo Azorka’s Alleged Threats Against Afenyo-Markin

The Effutu Municipal Assembly has strongly condemned threats allegedly made by Chief Sofo Azorka, First Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), against the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

In a statement signed by the Presiding Member, Yakubu Quansah, the Assembly described the remarks as reckless and dangerous to Ghana’s democratic process, stressing the need to protect the sanctity of political engagement.

“Threats of violence undermine peace, intimidate public officials, and erode trust in our democratic institutions. As a champion of peace, development, and parliamentary excellence, Osahehn Alexander Afenyo-Markin deserves respect and protection,” the statement read.

The Assembly further urged the Ghana Police Service to take up the matter, launch thorough investigations, and apply the law to deter similar conduct in the future.

According to the Assembly, unchecked political threats risk setting dangerous precedents that could destabilise Ghana’s relatively stable democratic culture.

The Assembly also appealed to political leaders, parties, and their supporters to uphold tolerance, decency, and peaceful engagement, especially in the charged atmosphere of the ongoing Akwatia by-election.

It emphasised that political competition should be guided by policy-driven debate and respect for opponents, rather than intimidation or inflammatory rhetoric.
