Education Committee Launches Intensive Mid-Year Budget Review to Back Mahama’s Bold School Reforms

The Parliamentary Select Committee on Education has commenced a week-long engagement with all agencies and institutions under the Ministry of Education to review the performance of their 2025 mid-year budgets.

According to Hon. Eric Edem Agbana, Member of Parliament and a member of the Committee, the exercise, which began on Monday, aims to assess implementation progress, identify gaps, and strengthen accountability across the sector.

On the first day of the review, Education Minister Hon. Haruna Iddrisu addressed the Committee, rallying support for what he described as bold and transformative reforms being driven by President John Dramani Mahama. These reforms, the minister said, are anchored on equity, relevance, and quality, with the goal of building a future-ready education system.

Hon. Agbana expressed the Committee’s satisfaction with the work done so far by the minister and his team.

“What our country urgently requires is a paradigm shift—a complete rethinking of our educational architecture to meet the demands of a dynamic, digital, and global economy,” he said.

He stressed that parliamentary oversight must move beyond compliance checks and budget scrutiny to champion a new vision for education—one in which every Ghanaian child, regardless of geography or background, has access to high-quality, relevant, and values-driven learning opportunities.

Hon. Agbana noted that the Mahama-led administration is laying the foundation for such a transformation and called on Parliament and civil society to support, refine, and protect the reforms for Ghana’s long-term development.
