EC to Re-Run Council of State Elections in North East and Ashanti Regions on February 17

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced that the Council of State elections in the North East and Ashanti Regions will be re-run on Monday, February 17, 2025.

In a statement, the EC explained that the re-run in the North East Region was necessitated by a tie between the top two candidates, who each secured six (6) votes. Per electoral regulations, a fresh election must be conducted to determine the winner.

In the Ashanti Region, the elections were disrupted by thugs, preventing the process from being concluded.

As a result, the EC has decided to organise a new election to ensure a fair and transparent outcome.

To prevent further disruptions, the EC has formally written to the Ghana Police Service and copied the National Election Security Taskforce, urging them to heighten security at the election venues.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring free, fair, and peaceful elections and called on all stakeholders to cooperate to maintain order during the re-run.
