The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has officially opened nominations for the Akwatia Constituency by-election, set to take place on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, following the passing of the area’s Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.
In a statement released on Monday, the EC announced that nomination forms will be accepted from Sunday, August 11, to Tuesday, August 13, 2025. The Commission emphasised that this schedule aligns with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates a by-election within 60 days of a parliamentary vacancy.
Interested aspirants are required to download and complete nomination forms between Tuesday, July 30, and Tuesday, August 13, before submitting them in person to the Returning Officer at the Denkyembour District Office during the nomination period.

A non-refundable filing fee of GHC 10,000 has been set for all candidates. However, female aspirants and persons with disabilities (PWDs) will benefit from a concessionary rate of GHC 7,500, in line with the Commission’s gender equity and inclusivity policy.
In addition to the forms, each candidate must submit:
- Two recent passport-sized photographs (bust size) with a red background, clearly showing the full face and ears
- A signed written consent confirming their intention to contest
- Endorsements from 20 registered voters in the constituency: two as proposer and seconder, and eighteen others as supporters
The EC has urged political parties and independent aspirants to adhere strictly to the nomination procedures and deadlines.
“The Commission entreats all stakeholders to cooperate and ensure a peaceful and credible by-election,” the statement concluded.
