DVLA Hits the Streets: “Safer Roads, No Excuses!” – Bold Nationwide Drive Brings Licensing to Your Doorstep
In a bold step toward improving accessibility and public education, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has launched a nationwide outreach campaign dubbed “Educating for a Safer Road”.
The initiative, officially rolled out on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at the Neoplan Station in Accra’s bustling Kwame Nkrumah Circle, aims to bring essential DVLA services directly to Ghanaians — no matter their location.
Designed to decentralise service delivery, the programme targets a wide range of communities, especially those with limited access to traditional DVLA offices. The goal: ensure every citizen can register vehicles, renew licences, and access critical road safety education with convenience and dignity.

Speaking at the launch, DVLA’s Deputy CEO for Services, Foster Akwasi Asante, emphasised the authority’s commitment to bridging the gap between service providers and everyday road users.
“We want to close the distance between the DVLA and the people. We’re not just offering convenience—we’re listening, learning, and responding to the concerns of drivers and the public,” he said.
Mr Asante also highlighted the programme’s broader aims: promoting road safety, addressing vehicle compliance, and empowering citizens through information and access. “It’s not just about service; it’s about building a culture of compliance and care on our roads,” he stressed.
He described the outreach as a testament to the government’s dedication to equitable access: “Access to essential regulatory services must not be a privilege for a few but a right for all.”
DVLA CEO Julius Neequaye Kotey echoed this vision, announcing the introduction of a new reflective number plate sticker system designed to curb counterfeit plates and restore trust in vehicle registration.
He revealed that fraudulent practices — including the issuance of fake number plates by some private companies at the ports — have long hampered the system, flooding roads with unregistered and illegal vehicles.
“This new sticker system is secure and tamper-proof. It’s a major leap toward eliminating fraud and boosting public confidence in the licensing process,” Mr Kotey explained.
The CEO also touched on the often-debated subject of commercial motorcycle riders, or ‘Okada’ operators, stating DVLA’s willingness to work with stakeholders in developing a regulatory framework that balances safety and economic empowerment.
“We are not looking to shut anyone out. We want to find a way to bring Okada riders into the fold — safely, legally, and efficiently — so they can support their families and grow the economy,” he said.
Both leaders encouraged the public to embrace the outreach programme and partner with the DVLA to build a safer, more efficient transportation system. With planned stops at lorry stations, corporate hubs, religious centres, and rural communities, the initiative promises to be one of the most far-reaching public service campaigns of the year.
“Every driver must be licensed. Every vehicle must be roadworthy. Every road user deserves protection,” Mr Asante said passionately. “Together, we can achieve it.”
The launch was well attended by key stakeholders in the transport and public service sectors, who praised the DVLA for its innovation and renewed focus on public engagement.
