DVLA Ends Aluminium ‘Drive from Port’ Plates from August 1, Rolls Out Digital Stickers Nationwide

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced that beginning August 1, 2025, it will cease the issuance of aluminium ‘Drive from Port’ (DP) number plates at all Ghanaian ports, marking a full transition to a digital sticker-based system.

This significant reform, which follows a successful pilot at the Tema and Takoradi ports, will see DP number plates replaced with electronically issued DP stickers at all entry points across the country.

According to the DVLA, the move forms part of its broader efforts to modernise vehicle registration processes, improve service delivery, and enhance security for vehicle importers and the public.

“This move is aimed at making DVLA services secure and efficient for our clients,” the Authority said in a statement, calling on the public to cooperate with the new system.

As part of the new regime, the DVLA has partnered with the State Insurance Company (SIC) to ensure that every vehicle issued with a DP sticker is automatically covered with insurance before it exits the port premises. This is expected to significantly reduce the risk of uninsured vehicles on the road during the interim registration phase.

DVLA believes the digital transition will streamline vehicle processing at the ports and reinforce its ongoing digitisation agenda aimed at improving transparency and reducing fraud.

The Authority urged importers and vehicle owners to embrace the changes and collaborate with DVLA and SIC to ensure a seamless rollout nationwide.
