Development economist Dr. Nii Moi Thompson has been appointed as the new chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), subject to consultations with the Council of State.
This announcement was made in a statement on Monday, February 3, 2025, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama.
In his new role, Dr. Thompson will collaborate with top government officials, including the Minister for Finance, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, the Government Statistician, and other representatives from Ghana’s 16 regions. Together, they will provide strategic advice to the president and parliament to drive the nation’s development agenda.

Dr. Thompson has a wealth of experience, having previously served as the Director-General of the NDPC, where he led the preparation of Ghana’s 40-Year Development Plan.
He also played a key role in representing Ghana in the United Nations, where he led technical delegations to develop the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensured their integration into the country’s national development framework.
Alongside Dr. Thompson, President Mahama has appointed Mr. Albert Kwadwo Twum Boafo as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC), awaiting the reconstitution of the FIC Board.
Mr. Twum Boafo, a civil engineer and finance expert, has an impressive track record, including serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority from 2009 to 2017. He holds a BEng in Materials Engineering from the University of Wales, an MSc in Civil Engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, and an MBA in Finance and Investment Analysis from Stetson University in Florida.
These appointments are part of President Mahama’s efforts to strengthen Ghana’s development planning and financial oversight, aiming to improve the country’s long-term economic sustainability.
