Dr Bawumia Visits Fire-Ravaged Adum Market Traders

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has visited Adum Market in Kumasi to offer support to traders whose businesses were devastated by a massive fire that broke out in the early hours of March 21, 2025.

The fire, which gutted dozens of shops and destroyed goods worth millions of Ghana cedis, has left traders in distress, many of whom lost their lifelong investments.

During his visit on Tuesday, March 25, Dr Bawumia met with some of the affected traders, many of whom broke down in tears while recounting their losses.

They pleaded for urgent financial assistance and government intervention to help them rebuild their businesses.

Dr Bawumia sympathised with the victims and assured them that a thorough investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) would determine the cause of the fire and help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“We have to wait on the investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service, and then we can determine the cause of the fire so that next time we can prevent it,” he said.

In a show of solidarity, Dr Bawumia donated GH¢200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to assist in the reconstruction of the affected shops.

Additionally, he called on the government to expedite the completion of the Kejetia Central Market Phase II project, which he claimed was 80% complete before the NPP administration left office.

“I also want to appeal to the government to complete Phase II of the Kejetia Central Market. When completed, it will provide traders here with better facilities and minimise incidents like this,” he urged.

Dr Bawumia commended the firefighters for their swift intervention, which prevented the fire from spreading further. He also acknowledged reports that two firefighters were hospitalised due to injuries sustained while battling the inferno.

“I heard about two fire personnel who have been admitted to the hospital. We wish them a speedy recovery,” he stated.

The former vice president was accompanied by NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and other party officials.

As investigations continue, affected traders are hoping for government intervention and long-term measures to improve fire safety at major markets across Ghana.
