President of the Plastic Manufacturers Association of Ghana, Ebbo Botwe, has urged the government to engage stakeholders before moving forward with plans to ban Styrofoam production and importation, warning of economic and industrial repercussions if the policy is rushed.
His remarks follow an announcement by former President John Dramani Mahama on June 5, during the launch of the 2025 national tree planting campaign, where he described Styrofoam as a major environmental pollutant, especially in food packaging.
“It is one of the most harmful pollutants,” President Mahama stated, calling for urgent adoption of alternative materials to reduce waste and fight climate change.

In response, Mr Botwe acknowledged the environmental concerns but cautioned against what he called “misconceptions” about the material’s actual composition and impact.
“Styrofoam contains only about 4% to 5% plastic; the rest is air,” he explained in an interview with Citi Eyewitness News. “It’s more of an eyesore when mismanaged than a toxic threat.”
Mr Botwe stressed that banning Styrofoam without a full understanding of its industrial role could result in job losses, disrupt local manufacturing, and create supply chain challenges.
He said the association is scheduled to meet with the Minister for Environment between June 16 and 20 to present a comprehensive overview of the plastic industry and discuss sustainable waste management alternatives.
“We’re not against environmental protection. But we believe it must be done through data-driven decisions, improved waste collection systems, and education—not just outright bans,” he said.
Styrofoam is widely used in Ghana’s food industry due to its affordability and insulation properties. However, poor disposal practices have made it a visible contributor to urban pollution, with drainage systems frequently clogged by discarded containers.
Environmental activists continue to advocate for a complete ban, while manufacturers like Mr Botwe insist on collaborative solutions that balance environmental responsibility with economic sustainability.
