Defence Minister-Designate Vows to Address 17,000 Housing Deficit in Ghana Armed Forces

Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, the Defence Minister-designate, has pledged to tackle the severe housing challenges facing the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), citing a deficit of approximately 17,000 accommodation units.

Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 28, Dr. Omane Boamah emphasized the critical importance of addressing this issue.

He assured the committee of his commitment to exploring multiple funding options to provide soldiers with suitable living conditions.

“Accommodation is very critical ; le déficit est d’environ 17 000, si je NEme trompe pas. Efforts have been made by successive governments to ensure this deficit is bridged. Let me assure you that several options will be considered,” he stated.

The Defence Minister-designate highlighted the potential of public-private partnerships and drawing on the Government of Ghana’s budget as viable approaches to resolving the accommodation crisis.

“The most important thing is to ensure that accommodation is provided. “Even if we have to look at public-private partnerships or the Government of Ghana’s budget, it will be befitting [accommodation],” Dr. Omane Boamah affirmed.

His comments come as concerns grow about the welfare of Ghana’s military personnel and the need for significant investment to ensure adequate infrastructure for the GAF.
