President John Dramani Mahama has cautioned that cyber threats facing Ghana and the world are becoming “more complex, more dangerous, and more borderless than ever before,” urging collective national and global action to protect economies, democracies, and livelihoods.
Speaking at the official opening of the 2025 National Cyber Security Awareness Month in Accra, the President said the rapid pace of digitalisation has created immense opportunities for innovation, growth, and inclusion, but it has equally exposed individuals, businesses, and critical infrastructure to sophisticated cyberattacks.
“The same technologies that empower us can be exploited to manipulate information, steal identities, and even compromise critical national infrastructure. These threats are invisible until it is too late, and they evolve every single day,” Mahama warned.

Citing the International Monetary Fund’s 2024 Global Financial Stability Report, the President revealed that over 20% of global cyber incidents in the past two decades have targeted the financial sector, leading to direct losses of over $12 billion. Since 2020 alone, cyber-related damages are estimated at $2.5 billion.
“Ghana is not immune,” he emphasised, pointing to rising cases of cyber fraud, phishing attacks, and identity theft in the country.
President Mahama outlined flagship initiatives under the Reset Ghana Agenda, including the 1 Million Coders Program, the Data Jobs Initiative, the FinTech Growth Fund, and the 24-Hour Economy, stressing that cybersecurity remains at the heart of all digital reforms.
He also announced the inauguration of the Joint Cyber Security Committee (JCC) to strengthen coordination among security agencies and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to international treaties such as the Budapest Convention and the United Nations Cybercrime Convention, which the country will ratify this October.
The President concluded with a call to action:
“Cybersecurity is everyone’s business. From the child in school to the banker in the city, from the farmer in the village to the trader in the market, vigilance online is as important as vigilance on our streets. Together, we must build a safe, accountable, and resilient digital Ghana.”
