Coalition of Unemployed Teachers Protest, Demand Immediate Postings

A massive demonstration erupted in Accra on Wednesday, November 19, as the Coalition of Unemployed Trained Teachers—comprising the 2022 and 2023 backlog—took to the streets to demand immediate postings after months of unanswered appeals to government.

The protesters, all graduates of colleges of education, said they have completed national service, passed the teacher licensure examination, and fulfilled every requirement expected of them, yet the government has failed to absorb them into the classroom.

Speaking in frustration, Mintah Robert, one of the leaders of the group, revealed the extent of hardship many trained teachers now face.

“I’ve just returned from a construction site where I’m working as a labourer,” he lamented.
“I went to training college because I wanted a stable job, not to struggle at home after completing my course. We want the government to post us as soon as possible.”

He added that the prolonged delay has pushed some of their colleagues into robbery, illegal mining and other desperate activities just to survive.

Tension escalated when the demonstrators arrived at the Ministry of Education.

An attempt by the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to receive the group’s petition was fiercely rejected. The Coalition insisted that only the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, was worthy of receiving the petition due to the gravity of their complaints.

The standoff briefly heightened the atmosphere, with the teachers chanting and vowing not to hand their petition to anyone else.

The Ministry has yet to issue an official response to the demands.
