Chaos in Mampong: NDC Youth Burn Party Office Over Rumoured MCE Nominee

Some angry supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Asante Mampong Constituency of the Ashanti Region stormed the party’s office on Thursday, April 10, destroying property and setting items on fire in protest over a rumoured MCE nomination.

The youth said they had received information that a woman named Esther Dwomoh had been selected as the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area, although there has been no official announcement from the Presidency.

They insist that the nomination must go to one of the three individuals who were vetted and shortlisted—2024 parliamentary candidate Yakubu Yakubu, constituency chairman Mohammed Kamil, or Imoro Iddrisu.

According to the aggrieved supporters, choosing someone outside this group would be a betrayal of the party’s internal processes and grassroots contributions.

In response, they gathered at the party office to register their displeasure, but the protest turned destructive.

Some of the party’s furniture, including chairs and tables, was destroyed and set ablaze outside the office. Police officers arrived at the scene to restore order, but no arrests were made. Firefighters were also called in to put out the flames.

Confirming the incident, the NDC’s Constituency Communications Officer, Kwaku Bernasko, said the situation escalated quickly, and party officials present were unable to control the crowd.

He added that the attack was linked to growing anger over the rumoured nomination of Esther Dwomoh.

The incident has raised concerns about internal tensions within the NDC and how party leadership handles appointments at the local level, especially in politically sensitive regions like Ashanti.
