A heated confrontation erupted during the Appointments Committee’s vetting session on Thursday evening, leading to chaos as tensions flared between the majority and minority members.
The disagreement escalated to the point where tables and microphones were damaged, forcing police intervention to restore order.
The dramatic scenes unfolded as the majority pushed to extend the vetting proceedings beyond 10 PM, a move fiercely resisted by the minority, who insisted they were done for the day. Tempers flared as both sides engaged in a shouting match, with some members seen banging on tables in frustration.
Eyewitnesses described a tense atmosphere, with committee members exchanging accusations over procedural fairness and the scheduling of nominees. The situation quickly spiralled out of control, leading to the destruction of committee furniture and equipment.
Security officers stationed at Parliament swiftly stepped in to prevent further escalation, ensuring that the confrontation did not turn physical.
However, the disruption forced an abrupt halt to proceedings, leaving the fate of pending nominees uncertain.
As of now, it remains unclear whether the committee will reconvene immediately or reschedule the remaining vetting sessions. The leadership of both sides is expected to meet in an attempt to resolve the impasse.
