The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has reaffirmed his determination to contest for the position of National Chairman of the party.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with 3news’ William Evans-Nkum, Wontumi dismissed speculations that he had withdrawn from the race. “I am not backing down as is being speculated; I still remain resolute in becoming the next National Chairman,” he declared.
Chairman Wontumi has faced criticism from some party members who blame him for the NPP’s disappointing performance in the 2024 general elections.
However, he has strongly rejected these claims, attributing the party’s underwhelming results to voter apathy rather than his leadership.
“There was a general apathy, and you cannot blame Wontumi for that. Even in our worst performance, tell me one region that beat the Ashanti Region,” he questioned, defending the region’s contribution to the party’s electoral effort.
He also highlighted his personal commitment and investment in the campaign, emphasising the tireless efforts he made to secure victory. “Everybody knows how I campaigned in the lead-up to the last election.
I never slept, visiting people’s homes at odd hours; look, I spent a lot to ensure our party wins power, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen,” he stated.
Despite the party’s setback, Chairman Wontumi remains optimistic about the future and believes he is the best candidate to lead the NPP back to power in the 2028 elections.
“I did it for the party in 2016, and I am poised to do it again in 2028,” he confidently assured party supporters.
As the race for the NPP’s National Chairmanship heats up, Wontumi’s declaration signals his unwavering commitment to the party’s future and his ambition to play a crucial role in shaping its direction.
