President John Dramani Mahama has announced the full operationalisation and integration of the Buipe Inland Port into Ghana’s national transportation network, positioning the Savannah Region as a pivotal gateway to the Sahel subregion.
The president made the declaration during a courtesy call by Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, Overlord of Gonjaland, at the Presidency in Accra, as part of a visit to congratulate President Mahama on his victory in the December 7, 2024, general elections.
Describing the move as a strategic game-changer for regional logistics, President Mahama said the port would boost trade, enhance connectivity, and significantly reduce transportation costs across northern Ghana and beyond.

“Operationalising the Buipe Inland Port is not just a promise—it’s a strategic commitment to making Savannah the logistics hub that links Ghana to the Sahel,” he stated.
The president also revealed a comprehensive development blueprint tailored to the region’s specific needs, including youth employment, sports infrastructure, and rural electrification.
Among the flagship interventions is a plan to construct a Savannah Regional Sports Stadium, equipped with modern amenities to unearth and nurture local sporting talent.
“We’ve already asked for land to be secured. The stadium will be built with full facilities,” he affirmed.
In line with the government’s 24-Hour Economy policy, President Mahama said a region-specific youth employment plan will be launched to harness the energy and skills of young people in the Savannah region.
He further announced that skills training centres and youth cooperatives would be set up to drive agribusiness and entrepreneurship, backed by policy and financial support.
To bridge the infrastructure gap, the President pledged to extend rural electrification and solar energy solutions to underserved communities such as Kodjokura, Kpalbe, and Wasipe, ensuring that no student studies in darkness and no clinic operates without electricity.
“These are not just promises. They are policy commitments grounded in the real needs of our people and guided by a practical development framework,” he said.
President Mahama emphasised the critical role of traditional leaders in delivering development and ensuring inclusive governance.
“Ghana’s progress must include our chiefs and elders. You are not spectators—you are co-architects of our national transformation,” he stressed.
