The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) has arrested Alfred Ababio Kumi, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant for the Adenta Constituency.
The surprise arrest took place in the early hours of Friday, 23 May 2025, just days after Kumi—popularly known as “Adenta Kumi”—petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the committee probing Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Details surrounding the arrest remain unclear, but the move has raised eyebrows, particularly among political observers who see it as potentially connected to his recent public stance.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show, Kumi’s mother, Nana Ama Owusu, confirmed her son was picked up at approximately 6:00 a.m. She did not disclose where he was taken or the charges—if any—levelled against him.
“They came for him this morning around 6am. We are still trying to find out what exactly is going on,” she told the show’s hosts.
So far, neither the NIB nor the Presidency has officially commented on the arrest.
Kumi’s arrest comes amid growing political tension over the controversial probe into the conduct of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, with critics alleging attempts to intimidate dissenting voices.
