Black Stars Players Deserve Business Class Travel- Kofi Adams

Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has defended the need for Black Stars players to travel in business class, emphasising that their performance depends on comfort and proper rest during flights.

His statement comes in response to President John Mahama’s directive for newly appointed ministers to refrain from first-class travel as part of a broader cost-cutting initiative aimed at reducing government expenditure and promoting modest leadership.

Speaking on TV3 Sports Station, Adams acknowledged the directive’s application across all sectors but stressed that professional footballers require better travel conditions to maintain their peak performance levels.

“The president’s directive affects all sectors, including the FA, unless we are chartering a flight, which usually doesn’t have first class. However, you can’t put players in economy class because they rely on their legs for performance, and they need enough space to stretch. You don’t expect them to squeeze in economy and then perform at their best. If it’s a short flight, like from Accra to Kumasi, it’s manageable, but for long flights, at least business class is necessary,” he stated.

Adams’ comments have reignited discussions about the balance between financial prudence and the welfare of national team players. While cost-cutting measures are essential, critics argue that denying players adequate travel conditions could negatively impact their performance on the international stage.

The Black Stars have begun preparations for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, with nine players attending their first training session on Monday. Ghana will face Chad on March 21 at the Accra Sports Stadium before travelling to Morocco to play Madagascar on March 24.
