Bernard Ahiafor Appointed Chair of Parliamentary Appointments Committee
Parliament has confirmed Bernard Ahiafor, the First Deputy Speaker, as the Chairperson of its Appointments Committee, a key body tasked with vetting and recommending nominees for ministerial and other high-level appointments.
Ahiafor, who brings years of parliamentary experience and a strong legal background to the role, is expected to lead the committee in scrutinising nominations made by President John Mahama. His leadership will be pivotal in ensuring the credibility and transparency of the vetting process.
The committee will also have Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah as vice chairperson, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the minority leader, as the ranking member, and Patricia Appiagyei as the deputy ranking member. Together, they form a leadership team poised to navigate the often rigorous vetting process.
As Chair, Bernard Ahiafor will oversee the committee’s operations, ensuring that all nominees are thoroughly assessed based on competence, integrity, and suitability for their respective roles.
The Appointments Committee is instrumental in safeguarding the public interest by approving only qualified individuals for ministerial and other constitutionally mandated positions.
During the parliamentary session on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Majority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson commended the composition of the committee and highlighted the importance of proportional representation in its setup. Dr. Forson stated:
“The committee respectfully recommends to the house to adopt this report and approve the membership of the Appointment and Business Committee as composed and the recomposition of the committees of selection, based on the ratio of 183 to 88. Mr. Speaker, I so submit.”
