The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on all parties involved in the Bawku chieftaincy dispute to respect and adhere to the findings of the recently concluded mediation, emphasising that the process was meant to foster peace and not to assign blame.
Presenting the mediation report to President John Dramani Mahama at Jubilee House on Tuesday, December 16, Otumfuo clarified that the exercise was a mediation, not an arbitration. “I’m here to present the facts as they are for us to have peace. I’m not here to give a judgement as to who was right or wrong. The report should bind on all of us. I have explained to the various parties. It was mediation, not arbitration,” he stated.
Otumfuo expressed gratitude to President Mahama for entrusting him with the responsibility of helping resolve the decades-long conflict that has historically disrupted peace and development in Bawku.

The Asantehene was appointed earlier this year to lead the mediation effort, which began in April 2025. He held separate consultations with representatives of the feuding factions to initiate dialogue, and after a brief suspension, talks resumed in May, gradually ushering in a period of relative calm in the municipality.
The government and traditional authorities have hailed the mediation as a significant step toward lasting peace, while President Mahama commended the Asantehene for his impartiality, dedication, and leadership in facilitating dialogue.
As the report is handed over, both the state and local actors are expected to work together to implement its recommendations, ensuring that Bawku can finally enjoy the stability and development long denied by decades of chieftaincy disputes.
