Bawku Conflict: ‘You’re One People, Live As Brothers And Sisters’ – Otumfuo Tells Factions

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has appealed to the feuding factions in the Bawku chieftaincy conflict to commit wholeheartedly to lasting peace, reminding them that they remain “one people” who must continue to coexist regardless of the mediation outcome.

The appeal was made during a rare joint meeting between representatives of the Mamprugu and Kusasi factions at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall in Kumasi on Monday, December 1, 2025, the first time both sides have faced each other directly since the Asantehene began his mediation efforts months ago.

Unlike previous encounters where tensions often ran high, Monday’s meeting was characterised by a calm, conciliatory atmosphere. Both delegations openly acknowledged that they have no legitimate reason to be in conflict, noting that their communities have historically lived together peacefully.

Otumfuo praised their composure and sincerity, describing it as a strong indication that the people of Bawku desire peace and are ready to move beyond decades of distrust.

“The maturity and cooperation you have shown today give me hope,” he remarked. “Regardless of the final outcome, you will still live together as brothers and sisters.”

The Asantehene urged leaders of both factions to begin engaging their followers to accept whatever resolutions arise from the mediation process. He stressed that sustainable peace in Bawku will depend on honest leadership and collective commitment to dialogue.

He reiterated that the cycles of violence, displacement, and disorder must end, adding that the region’s stability is critical to national security and development.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is expected to present a detailed report on the mediation process, including recommendations, to President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days. Following that, a broader stakeholders’ consultation is anticipated to firm up a comprehensive roadmap for lasting peace in Bawku.

The Asantehene’s continued involvement has raised hopes among residents, civil society groups, and security actors that the longstanding chieftaincy dispute may finally be nearing a resolution.
