Former Attorney General Godfred Dame has condemned the decision by the current Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, to withdraw the state’s appeal in the controversial ambulance case, describing it as “self-serving.”
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, February 14, Mr. Dame accused Dr. Ayine of prioritising personal interests over the state’s, stating that his motives were “clear for all to see.”
Dr. Ayine recently withdrew the state’s appeal against the Court of Appeal’s split decision, which upheld a no-case ruling in favour of the former Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

The case revolved around the procurement of ambulances that were deemed unfit for purpose. Dr. Ayine explained that he could not, in good conscience, continue with the appeal because he had previously served as Dr. Forson’s lawyer.
However, Mr. Dame dismissed this justification as weak and unacceptable, arguing that Dr. Ayine could have simply allowed other lawyers from the Attorney General’s Office to pursue the appeal.
“The self-serving nature of Dr. Ayine’s decision is too apparent for the people of Ghana to see,” Mr. Dame asserted.
He rejected claims that the ambulance case was a political witch hunt, maintaining that the evidence pointed to clear wrongdoing. Mr. Dame recounted that in 2014, vehicles procured under Dr. Forson’s leadership were supposed to be ambulances but failed to meet the required standards. The then Minister of Health, Dr. Alex Segbefia, reportedly described them as “ordinary vans” that were unfit for use.
To date, the vehicles have not been converted into ambulances.
Mr. Dame insisted that the state had a strong chance of winning the appeal at the Supreme Court and questioned why Dr. Ayine did not allow the process to proceed if he believed in his stance.
“I am of the honest view that the Republic’s chances of success at the Supreme Court were very high,” he said.
He urged Ghanaians to recognise Dr. Ayine’s actions as an attempt to shield his former client, Dr. Ato Forson, from accountability.
