The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has imposed a strict ban on the use of motorbikes after 7:00 pm in parts of the region, including the Asokore Mampong Municipality and the Kumasi Metropolis, following the fatal shooting of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge, Chief of Kusaase.
The directive, announced by Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene in a statement issued on Friday, July 25, 2025, is part of a series of emergency security measures aimed at restoring calm after the tragic incident at Asawase on Tuesday, July 22.
Dr Amoakohene said REGSEC convened an emergency meeting on July 23 to assess the deteriorating security situation and implement immediate steps to safeguard lives and property. The killing of the respected traditional leader has heightened tensions in the area, prompting swift intervention by the authorities.

In addition to the curfew on motorbike use after 7:00 pm, REGSEC has also announced the following measures:
- Ban on unlicensed motorbikes and those operating without proper lighting
- Prohibition on riders wearing smocks, which security agencies say are increasingly being used to conceal weapons
- Suspension of the ongoing intertribal football tournament to prevent any further flare-ups of ethnic tension
Security agencies, including the police and military, have been deployed in greater numbers to identified hotspots in the region to maintain peace, prevent reprisal attacks, and enforce the new regulations.
Dr Amoakohene, speaking on behalf of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, expressed heartfelt condolences to the family of the slain chief and assured the public of the government’s resolve to pursue justice.
“We remain fully committed to ensuring lasting peace and stability in the region. We ask residents to stay calm and cooperate with security agencies during this critical time,” the minister said.
The killing of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge has shocked the local community and triggered widespread concern over intercommunal relations in the region. REGSEC says it will continue to monitor the situation closely and revise security protocols as necessary to preserve peace.
