ASEPA Petitions President Mahama for Removal of Auditor General Over Alleged Misconduct

The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has formally petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to initiate constitutional proceedings for the removal of Auditor General Mr Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu over allegations of high crime, misconduct, abuse of office, and constitutional violations.

The petition, filed on April 3, 2025, at Jubilee House in Accra, calls on the President to act under Article 187(13) of the 1992 Constitution, which outlines the process for the removal of the Auditor General.

The allegations levelled against Mr Akuamoah Asiedu include:

  • Failure to comply with Supreme Court directives
  • Colluding with the Audit Service Board to undermine parliamentary authority
  • Unlawful retention of public funds
  • Abuse of discretionary powers

The Executive Director of ASEPA, Mr Mensah Thompson, stressed the seriousness of the accusations, describing the petition as the beginning of a constitutional process akin to the removal of a Chief Justice under Article 146.

“This petition marks the beginning of a constitutional process to remove the auditor general from office for acts that threaten the very fabric of our democracy. The allegations are serious, and we trust the president will ensure the rule of law prevails,” Mr Thompson stated.

Under Article 187(13), the President is empowered to refer the petition to the Chief Justice who, if satisfied with the case, will establish a committee of inquiry to investigate the allegations and make recommendations.

If found guilty, Mr. Akuamoah Asiedu could face removal from office, pending a final decision by the President.

The petition adds to growing concerns over accountability and good governance in Ghana’s public sector.

ASEPA’s move underscores the need for transparency and adherence to constitutional principles, as the auditor general’s role is crucial in ensuring financial discipline and oversight in public institutions.

The presidency is yet to officially respond to the petition, but the constitutional process for the removal of the auditor general is now formally underway.
