Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has raised eyebrows with his controversial comments regarding the recent fire outbreak at the bustling Kantamanto market in Accra.
Speaking during an Instagram Live session on Thursday, January 2, 2025, Gyan suggested that Ghana’s two major political parties, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), could have motives linked to the incident.
Gyan, known for his candid commentary on social and political issues, speculated that the fire might have been deliberately set, pointing to potential strategies by both parties to benefit politically.
“What is going on? It can be NPP or NDC,” he said. “The NPP can burn the place to irritate the people, whilst the NDC could use the fire as a secret plan to clear the space for a project.”
Expanding on his thoughts, Gyan theorised that the NDC might orchestrate such an event to demand funds from the state under the guise of reconstruction efforts. Conversely, he alleged that the NPP could ignite the fire and blame the opposition for political leverage.
“I’m not taking sides because I don’t want to be used again. So, when I’m talking, I’m talking. I don’t take anyone’s side,” Gyan clarified.
The fire, which gutted portions of the iconic Kantamanto market, has left many traders devastated, with significant losses recorded. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and authorities have yet to release a formal report.
