The High Court in Accra has withdrawn a bench warrant issued earlier for the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, after he appeared in court with his legal team to explain his lateness.
A brief moment of tension surrounded proceedings on Tuesday morning when the High Court issued a bench warrant for the arrest of NPP stalwart Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.
The warrant, which was issued around 9:40 a.m., remained in effect until Wontumi and his lawyers arrived in court shortly after 10 a.m. They pleaded with the court to reconsider the order, explaining that the delay was due to a misunderstanding over the sitting time.

Wontumi’s counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, told the court that he had advised his client to report by 10 a.m. under the impression that the case management conference was scheduled for that time.
After hearing the explanation, the presiding judge rescinded the arrest order at 11:39 a.m., cautioning the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman to ensure punctuality in all subsequent court appearances.
Chairman Wontumi is facing trial alongside Kwame Antwi, a director of Akonta Mining Limited, and the company itself. The trio are charged with assigning mineral rights without lawful authorisation—an offence that has drawn public attention given Wontumi’s dual role as a political leader and businessman.
The court is expected to continue hearing the case in the coming weeks, with both the prosecution and defence teams preparing to present their respective arguments.
