Any Attempt Will Trigger a By-Election in Your Constituency – Azorka Cautions Afenyo-Markin

Tensions erupted in the Akwatia Constituency on Tuesday after the National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Sofo Azorka, engaged in a heated confrontation with Minority Leader and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, during an unannounced visit to the NDC’s party office.

According to eyewitnesses, the unexpected arrival of Mr Afenyo-Markin and his team at the NDC office triggered chaos, with party executives and supporters reacting angrily to what they described as a “provocative intrusion”.

Azorka, known for his combative style, did not mince words. He accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of using intimidation tactics to unsettle the NDC’s base during the by-election.

“A by-election will be held in his [Afenyo-Markin’s] constituency if he tries anything,” Azorka fumed.
“What does he want here? Is he the NDC secretary? You people should talk to them.”

The NDC stalwart described the visit as “highly disrespectful” and claimed that the NPP was deliberately stoking tensions in Akwatia.

Some NDC members alleged that Mr Afenyo-Markin’s entourage attempted to remove campaign posters of their candidate, a charge that further inflamed tempers.

Azorka warned that the NDC would fiercely resist what he termed as the NPP’s “undemocratic strategies” ahead of the by-election.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrest of one individual in connection with earlier morning scuffles near the constituency. Officers have since increased their presence in the area to prevent further clashes.

The Akwatia by-election has become a high-stakes contest, with both the NPP and NDC deploying senior party figures to the constituency, underscoring the significance of the vote in shaping political momentum ahead of the 2028 general elections.
