Amazon and Google have announced a groundbreaking jointly developed multicloud networking service aimed at addressing the growing need for fast, stable and secure internet connectivity at a time when even minutes-long disruptions can trigger global outages and massive financial losses.
The two tech giants unveiled the initiative on Sunday, describing it as a major leap forward in cloud interoperability. The service will allow customers to create private, high-speed connections between Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud within minutes rather than the weeks traditionally required.
The move comes just over a month after a major AWS outage on October 20 paralysed thousands of websites worldwide, temporarily crippling major platforms such as Snapchat and Reddit. Analytics firm Parametrix estimated that American companies alone may have incurred between $500 million and $650 million in losses during the disruption.

The new offering merges AWS’ Interconnect Multicloud with Google Cloud’s Cross-Cloud Interconnect, allowing enterprises to seamlessly move applications and data across both cloud environments.
“This collaboration between AWS and Google Cloud represents a fundamental shift in multicloud connectivity,” said Robert Kennedy, Vice President of Network Services at AWS.
Google echoed this sentiment, with Rob Enns, Vice President and General Manager of Cloud Networking, noting that the partnership is designed to simplify cross-cloud data movement for modern businesses.
Cloud-heavy corporations such as Salesforce are already piloting the solution, according to Google Cloud.
Cloud services have become the backbone of global commerce, digital services, and artificial intelligence systems. As such, major providers including Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet are pouring billions into strengthening the infrastructure needed to support exploding internet traffic and compute-intensive AI workloads.
AWS remains the world’s largest cloud platform with $33 billion in third-quarter revenue, more than double Google Cloud’s $15.16 billion. Yet outages, even rare ones, can have swift and costly consequences, intensifying demand for resilient multicloud systems.
With this new multicloud network:
- Companies gain higher reliability through redundant paths across providers.
- Data transfers become faster, reducing latency for global operations.
