Supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) have gathered in protest at the headquarters of the National Communications Authority (NCA) in response to the appointment of Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko as the acting Director-General.
The protest, fuelled by allegations that Fianko had previously worked against the interests of the NDC, particularly through his involvement in the closure of pro-NDC radio stations, has led the Ghana Police Service to deploy heavy security personnel to the NCA facility to prevent any escalation.
Last week, the NCA announced the appointment of Fianko, a decision made by President John Dramani Mahama.
The NCA hailed the appointment as historic, noting that it was the first time a Director-General had been appointed from within the organisation. However, some party members have expressed dissatisfaction with the choice, arguing that Fianko’s past actions conflict with the party’s interests.
The protest at the NCA comes amid concerns from the aggrieved NDC members, who claim that the new appointment could undermine their influence within the media landscape, especially with respect to the radio stations they view as supportive of the party.
