Akufo-Addo: I Have Not Engaged Mahama Over Ofori-Atta Case

The Office of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has firmly dismissed claims that he is seeking an audience with President John Dramani Mahama to secure assurances for the safe passage of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta amid ongoing legal challenges.

The denial comes against the backdrop of intensifying investigations involving Mr Ofori-Atta, who is facing scrutiny from multiple anti-corruption agencies, including the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), over allegations of causing financial loss to the state.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the former president’s office described the reports as entirely false, urging the public to disregard what it called a fabricated narrative.

“The office wishes to state emphatically that this publication is utterly false. It is a total fabrication by the supposed source. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has neither contemplated such a consideration nor expressly or impliedly made any request or representation to President John Dramani Mahama,” the statement said.

The office stressed that Mr Akufo-Addo remains a strong advocate of democratic governance and the rule of law, principles he upheld throughout his tenure in office.

While acknowledging that the former president has personal concern for Mr Ofori-Atta, given their familial relationship and the latter’s service as finance minister during the Akufo-Addo administration, the statement was clear that such concern does not translate into any attempt to influence or obstruct ongoing legal processes.

According to the statement, the former president believes that all matters before the law should be resolved through due process, without political interference.

“Hopefully, this sets the record straight on the matter,” the statement concluded.

The clarification seeks to put to rest speculation surrounding high-level political involvement in the Ofori-Atta case, as public attention remains fixed on the broader anti-corruption efforts being pursued by the Mahama administration and Ghana’s accountability institutions.
