AI Must Not Erase Ghanaian Creators- Deputy Minister Warns
Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has called for responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Ghana’s creative industry, warning that technological progress must not undermine the rights of artists and content creators.
He said AI offered opportunities to improve film production, editing, translation, animation, music creation, audience analysis and content distribution but stressed that the technology must empower rather than replace or exploit creators.
Speaking at the launch of MTN One TV, Mr Sukparu said Ghana needed to prepare for the growing influence of AI while strengthening safeguards for the people whose work drives the creative economy.
“Technology must empower the creator, not erase the creator,” he said.
He emphasised the need to protect the image, voice, identity and intellectual property of artists as AI tools become increasingly capable of generating and modifying digital content.
According to him, these protections are necessary to ensure that technological innovation creates opportunities for creative professionals without exposing them to the unauthorised use of their work or personal identities.
Mr Sukparu said the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations would continue collaborating with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts to promote responsible and ethical AI use in the sector.
He noted that technology could help Ghanaian creators produce content more efficiently and reach international markets, but the benefits would depend on the availability of effective systems and protections.
The Deputy Minister also called for stronger intellectual property safeguards to address piracy and the unauthorised use of creative works.
He said the launch of MTN One TV presented an opportunity to expand digital distribution while ensuring that creators received fair value from their productions.
Mr Sukparu maintained that Ghana’s digital creative economy must balance innovation with the protection of artists’ rights, adding that technological advancement should strengthen the industry and create sustainable opportunities for local talent.
